This lowland forest near Trino Vercellese has been managed continuously since the 14th century under a communal partecipanza system where local families draw lots for timber rights, making it one of Europe's oldest surviving examples of common woodland. Ancient pedunculate oaks and hornbeams, some centuries old, tower over a rich understorey rare in the intensively farmed Po plain. It's an unexpected pocket of old-growth forest surrounded by rice paddies.
