The Sughereta di Santo Pietro is a mosaic of cork oak, Aleppo pine and macchia over old dunes and clay — home to Hermann's tortoise, hoopoes and, on the ponds, the rare Sicilian pond turtle. Flat forestry roads and rides cross it from the Santo Pietro railway halt, with a small botanical garden near the ranger base.
