The Bosco di Santa Croce above Gubbio is the forest from which the wooden Ceri (massive candles) are cut for Gubbio's Corsa dei Ceri festival (the oldest continuously-running festival in Italy, since 1160). The forest is a mix of turkey oak and chestnut above the Roman city. Deer are abundant; the spring wildflowers on the forest margins are excellent. The view over Gubbio from the forest edge is one of the finest in Umbria.
