The Bosco di Sant'Angelo near Palombaro above the Aventino river is one of the last lowland oak forests in Abruzzo — Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) with old-growth structure, coppiced for charcoal for centuries. Wild boar herds. Peregrine on the gorge cliff above. The forest protects the gorge of the Aventino below (accessible by a steep path). Black woodpecker. Dogs off-leash.
