Bosco di Gallipoli Cognato
Basilicata
The Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park protects a large block of Turkey oak and chestnut forest below the 'Lucanian Dolomites' — a series of sandstone pinnacles above Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. The forest is exceptional in scale and intactness for southern Italy. Wildcats, otters on the Basento river and tawny owls are all present. The forest floor in spring is carpeted with wild orchids.
