Bosco della Mesola

Emilia-Romagna

This state forest is a surviving remnant of the wild woodland that historically blanketed much of the Adriatic coast before centuries of drainage and clearing, and it still shelters a population of native fallow and roe deer within a fenced conservation area. Holm oak and umbrella pine dominate the drier dunes, giving way to damper ash and poplar stands further inland.
