Borgo di Bard & la Gola

Aosta Valley

Where the valley pinches to a few dozen metres, the fortified village of Bard huddles between the river and the fort's rock. Its single cobbled street of 15th- and 16th-century houses, the old Roman-and-Napoleonic road cut into the cliff, and the wheel-rut grooves of centuries of carts make a short, atmospheric walk under the ramparts.
