Bari's old city occupies a small promontory jutting into the Adriatic — a tangle of lanes where women still make orecchiette pasta in the street. The Basilica di San Nicola (1087) holds the bones of St Nicholas (the real Santa Claus, moved from Turkish Myra). The seafront Lungomare Nazario Sauro stretches 8 km of promenade.
