Riserva delle Baragge

The baragge are ancient river terraces whose iron-hardened, nutrient-poor soil supports a heathland ecosystem more reminiscent of Atlantic Europe than the surrounding rice paddies of Vercelli. Stunted pedunculate oaks, heather, and broom cover the plateau, and the reserve protects rare birds like the woodlark and red-backed shrike. It's an eerily open, big-sky landscape best walked in the low light of early morning or dusk.
