Balzi Rossi
Liguria
The reddish limestone cliffs of Balzi Rossi, right at the French border near Ventimiglia, take their colour from iron oxide and have yielded human remains and burials dating back over 20,000 years, among the most important Paleolithic finds in Europe. A small onsite museum displays original artefacts alongside casts of the burial sites found in the cave mouths above the water. The coastal path here looks directly across to Menton and the French Riviera.
