Balma Boves, Sanfront
Piedmont
Balma Boves takes its name from the Piedmontese balma, a shelter under an overhanging rock. Stone houses press against the cliff face at about 600 m above Sanfront, in the upper Po valley — roofs nearly flat, doors low, built to hold heat through Alpine winters. Inhabited into the 1950s, the hamlet is now a museum-village restored by the local municipality; a trail continues above it to Rocca La Casna, where Bronze Age rock carvings mark an old quartzite quarry route.
