The lower town of Balestrino is still lived in, but the steep upper quarter was progressively evacuated through the 20th century as the ground crept, and now stands empty beneath the Del Carretto castle — roofless houses, weed-grown lanes and a strange stillness. The safe streets around it make an eerie short wander.
