The Bosco della Frattona near Imola is a 200-hectare estate forest that has never been cleared — English oak, hornbeam and field maple forest on the foothills above the Po plain. The oldest trees date from the 17th century and some oaks exceed 1 m diameter. Dormice, red squirrels and tawny owls inhabit the canopy. In autumn the forest floor is covered with edible fungi including porcini and chanterelle.
