Valle dell'Anapo, Siracusa

Sicily

The Fiume Ciane and Anapo near Siracusa harbour the only wild papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) colony in Europe — brought from Egypt in antiquity and naturalised. Boat trips or walks along the river pass through stands of papyrus 3–4 m high. The Siracusa papyrus museum explains how the ancient city produced papyrus scrolls from this exact colony.
