Altilia — Saepinum, Roman City
Molise
Saepinum was a Roman municipium — its walls, gates, forum, basilica and theatre are better preserved than most famous Roman sites but attract perhaps 5,000 visitors per year. The city is still surrounded by active farmland: sheep still pass through the Roman gates on the transumanza (seasonal migration) route they have used for 2,000 years. There is no entry fee, no crowds, no guided tours.
