The Apuan Alps above Carrara are entirely made of Carrara marble — white mountains that glow like snow year-round. Quarry roads and paths traverse a surreal landscape of marble slabs, turquoise pools and vertical white faces. Michelangelo personally selected stone from here; the quarries are still active.
