Accettura's Maggio festival, considered the most elaborate of Basilicata's several tree-marriage traditions, involves felling a huge oak and a slender holly in the Gallipoli Cognato forest and hauling them together into the village to be symbolically wed. The forest itself, part of the wider Gallipoli Cognato park, gives good walking year-round.
