San Galgano Roofless Abbey

The Abbazia di San Galgano (1218) stands roofless in a Maremma valley after its Cistercian monks disbanded. The empty nave frames the sky through Gothic arches; swallows nest in the triforium. On the hill above, a round Romanesque chapel contains the actual sword in the stone of the Arthurian legend's Italian version.
