Founded in 980 AD by a wandering hermit, Fonte Avellana became one of Italy's most important centres of monastic reform in the 11th century under St Peter Damian. Dante visited and mentioned it in Paradiso. The scriptorium produced some of the most important manuscripts of the Carolingian period. The abbey sits at 700 m in beech forest below Monte Catria — one of the Apennines' most atmospheric monastic landscapes.
