The Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Volturno near Castel San Vincenzo was founded in 703 AD and became one of the richest Benedictine abbeys in Italy before being destroyed by Saracens in 881 AD. The rebuilt crypt (833 AD) contains the finest Carolingian frescoes in existence — 54 figures in perfect condition. The abbey was rediscovered in the 19th century. Dogs on leash in the grounds.
