Founded by the Lombard duke Faroaldo II around 720, San Pietro in Valle keeps one of the oldest fresco cycles in Italy, Roman and Lombard sarcophagi and a quiet cloister, set among olive and holm oak with a view over the Nera gorge to the twin castle-hamlets of Ferentillo.
