Abbazia di Pulsano, Monte Sant'Angelo

Founded in 1129, the Abbazia di Santa Maria di Pulsano hangs on a ledge above the Stignano gorge, which drops toward the Gulf of Manfredonia. A path from the abbey descends into the ravine past the "eremi" — cells and chapels cut into the rock where hermits still occasionally live — with vultures overhead.
