St Benedict founded Montecassino in 529; the abbey was flattened by Allied bombing in the 1944 battle and faithfully rebuilt. The road up gives views over the Liri valley, and the Polish, German and Commonwealth war cemeteries on the slopes are quiet, walkable memorials to that battle.
