Cistercian monks founded this abbey in the 12th century, and the surrounding estate has since become a protected nature reserve of oak woodland and open pasture where fallow deer roam in substantial numbers. The abbey church and cloister remain remarkably well preserved and open to visitors alongside the walking trails. Roman-era ruins from the ancient town of Urbs Salvia lie just beyond the reserve's edge.
