Verucchio was the Malatesta family's first power base before they moved to Rimini, and their fortress still crowns the hill above a town whose surrounding necropolis has yielded some of the richest Iron Age Villanovan grave goods found in Italy. The fortress terrace looks out over the Marecchia valley toward the coast.
