Valle Giumentina sits at the base of the Majella above Abbateggio, a broad glacial-karst basin whose sediment layers have preserved one of the longest Palaeolithic sequences in Europe — flint tools spanning hundreds of thousands of years, still being excavated. None of that shows above ground: today it is simply open, grassy high pasture, quiet and easy underfoot, with the trail on to the Eremo di San Bartolomeo climbing away at its edge.
