Sperlonga's whitewashed old town, Moorish-looking with its stepped white lanes, sits on a headland dividing two curved sandy bays. At the southern end, Emperor Tiberius built a villa around a natural sea grotto — now an archaeological site holding some of the finest Hellenistic-style sculpture found in Italy, discovered when the grotto partially collapsed in 1957.
