While most Vesuvius routes climb the bare, ash-grey southern crater slopes, the northern side above Somma Vesuviana supports a surprising beech forest, cooler and greener thanks to different exposure and rainfall patterns. Trails wind through the trees with occasional clearings looking back toward the crater rim.
