The pilgrimage church of Re, rebuilt on a monumental scale in the 20th century, stands at the head of the Val Vigezzo where the Melezzo runs into Switzerland. Flat lanes follow the river and the old customs road through birch and alder toward the frontier, past painters' villages like Santa Maria Maggiore and Craveggia.
