Founded by Gioacchino da Fiore around 1200, the Florense abbey gave its name to both a monastic order that spread across Europe and the town that grew around it, the largest settlement on the Sila plateau. The grounds and surrounding countryside give an easier, lower-altitude alternative to the higher Sila peaks nearby.
