Sabbioneta was built in the 1550s–80s by Vespasiano Gonzaga as a complete, purpose-designed Renaissance city, its grid of streets, theatre and palaces enclosed within star-shaped fortifications — earning it the nickname "the little Athens" and UNESCO World Heritage status. The flat streets are easy walking end to end.
