Established in 1995 around the still-active Vesuvius cone, the park protects the volcano's lower slopes — broom and Aleppo pine on old lava flows, vineyards producing the DOC Lacryma Christi wine, and a network of numbered trails through the Valle dell'Inferno and the Tirone high forest. The famous crater-rim walk (Trail 5) is only one of nine official routes threading the park.
