Stretching from the Ortles-Cevedale glaciers down through larch forest to the Valtellina, the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio (established 1935, one of Italy's oldest) is best known for the 48-hairpin pass road from Bormio, but its real character is in the side valleys — Val Zebrù, Val di Rezzalo, Val Viola — where ibex, chamois and a reintroduced brown bear population range through some of the wildest terrain in the eastern Alps.
