The Majella rises as a single vast limestone block between the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic, its plateau cut by gorges like the Orfento and Orta and scattered with over a hundred hermit caves used by medieval monks — Celestine V, later pope, lived in several. Golden eagle, Apennine wolf and one of Europe's densest chamois populations range across a landscape locals still call "la Maiella madre" (mother Majella).
