Centred on the beech-forested valleys around Pescasseroli, this park was founded in 1922 to protect a handful of surviving Marsican brown bears — a subspecies found nowhere else, now numbering around 50-60. Wolves, reintroduced Abruzzo chamois and golden eagles share the same forests and high pastures, and the park's conservation model (dawn bear-watching in valleys like the Camosciara and Valle di Rose) has become a template for the rest of the Apennines.
