Where the Colli Albani volcano last erupted some 20,000 years ago, its collapsed craters now hold Lake Albano and Lake Nemi, and the surrounding hills carry the "castelli" towns — Castel Gandolfo, Frascati, Nemi, Rocca di Papa — long favoured as a cool retreat from Roman summers. Chestnut and oak woods cover the crater rims, and the park's trails link vineyards, monasteries and the wooded slopes of Monte Cavo, the district's highest point.
