Sharper and more alpine-looking than their modest altitude suggests, the Apuan Alps are almost pure marble — quarried at Carrara since Roman times, prized by Michelangelo, and still worked today alongside the park's protected wild core. Deep karst carves the range with caves (Grotta del Vento among the show caves) and gorges, and relict beech forest survives on north-facing slopes untouched by the quarries below.
