Monte Cimino rises from the volcanic Cimini district above Viterbo, its 1,053 m summit crowned by a UNESCO-listed old-growth beech forest — some of the tallest beech trees in Europe, scattered with trachyte boulders thrown up by eruptions over a million years ago. One giant balanced boulder near the top, the Sasso Menicante, was already a curiosity in Roman times. Trails climb through the forest from Soriano nel Cimino.
