Once a malarial marsh drained in the early 1900s, Mondello became Palermo's seaside playground almost overnight, its centrepiece the Art Nouveau Stabilimento Balneare Liberty standing on stilts over the water. The bay curves between Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, and the beach itself is a short bus ride from central Palermo.
