Manfredonia's castle, begun by King Manfred in the 13th century and later expanded, guards the flat coastal town at the point where the Gargano promontory begins to rise. The grounds around it give a view along the shore toward the Gargano's wooded headlands, distinct from the wetland reserves elsewhere in town.
