Lago di Pietrarossa & the Margherito wetland, Caltagirone
Sicilia
The Pietrarossa lake, part of a Natura 2000 site with the nearby Ogliastro reservoir, is a low sheet of water fringed by tamarisk and giant reed where the Margherito slows in the clay hills. Flat farm tracks and an embankment path follow it, good for herons, stilts, and — in winter — flamingos and cranes.
