At 710 m on the flank of Monte Matanna above Casoli di Camaiore, Grotta all'Onda was occupied for tens of thousands of years — first by late Neanderthals, later by Homo sapiens through the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Finds here include one of Europe's most recent cave lion remains. An easy CAI path climbs through oak woodland from Casoli to reach it, with the Apuan Alps rising behind.
