Herculaneum was buried more completely than Pompeii by the same 79 AD eruption, preserving wooden beams, furniture and even food in carbonised form. The open grounds around the excavation border the Miglio d'Oro, a stretch of grand 18th-century villas built by the Neapolitan aristocracy along the old royal road.
