Cuneo's name literally means "wedge", describing the triangular plateau the city occupies between the Stura and Gesso rivers, its Piazza Galimberti one of the largest squares in Italy. The flat plateau setting is a lower-altitude counterpart to the high Alpi Marittime park the province is also known for.
