The Bourbon fortress at Civitella del Tronto runs for nearly 500 m along a narrow ridge, one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe and the site of the last stand of Bourbon forces during Italian unification in 1861. Walking the length of the ramparts gives sweeping views into both Abruzzo and the neighbouring Marche.
