Caltagirone — Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte

Caltagirone has produced glazed ceramics since Arab rule, and the town's most famous expression of that craft is the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, a 142-step staircase where every riser is decorated with a different hand-painted tile design. The climb is steady but the view from the top over the town's domed rooftops is worth it.
