Calanchi di Montalbano Jonico
Basilicata
The "calanchi" of Montalbano are a regional reserve of eroded Pliocene clay — a lunar country of sharp blades ("calanchi") and smooth domes ("biancane") dropping toward the Agri valley. Marked ridge paths from the edge of the town give the classic views; best in the low light of morning or evening, and not after rain.
