Il nome viene da una casamatta ottocentesca costruita per combattere il brigantaggio. Oggi la strada panoramica da Pretoro e Passolanciano termina vicino al Rifugio Pomilio, da dove sentieri facili corrono lungo la cresta di Cima Blockhaus con l'Adriatico da un lato e l'altopiano interno della Majella dall'altro.
