Old Africo, deep in the Aspromonte's interior, was largely abandoned after catastrophic flooding in 1951 forced the resettlement of most residents to a new coastal town of the same name. The roofless stone ruins, now half-swallowed by encroaching forest, make for a quiet, slightly haunting walk through a chapter of Calabria's hard rural history.
